love-on-fire-2October 2, 2010

I was thinking the other day about the church I grew up in. It was small, quaint and full of energy. It was comprised of Families, some single mothers, single men, or elerly men and women. We were such a small church all we had was a drum set, an organ and hand clapping and foot stomping musical ensemble, Oh and of course my favorite a tambourine. Church was my life. Dinners on Sunday’s were the best. Why? Because we served dinner in the kitchen of the church for ease of the saints, no need to drive home when you would have to turn right back around to attend Sunday evening service or if not eating at church we would all end up at someone’s house, usually Mother Carter. This was an opportunity to talk, see what was happening in the lives of the folks who attended church and how we could help each other out if we could. There was no shame in asking for help or receiving help. This truly was one of the best times of my life. I often wonder about those times, what happened? Has the family environment been replaced by clicks and economic status?

Gone are the days of evening service? Caravans to visit other churches and the mothers of the church who were in fact more like surrogate grandmothers. Those were the days  when all us kids would hang out and play, sing, play the drums or try to play the organ.  I saw Mothers of the Church teach decorum to the young ladies and the Deacons taught the young men how to be men and gentlemen. When I actually paid attention, I remember the sermons preached. This was usually because none of my counterparts were sitting next to me due to our chatter, we were band from each other for one reason or another. I tell you after a certain age sleeping in church was a crime. LOL!!! I love reminiscing about those days. What I remember most was the fire in the eyes and words of the pastors, deacons, missionaries and saints. “Give Your Life to Christ“….I remember going from door to door witnessing for the Lord. I remember the pastors and elders standing out on the street corners encouraging people to “Give Their Lives to Christ” with these booming voices that seemed to echo like in a cavern in the desert. You had a choice where you wanted to spend eternity and it was either Heaven or Hell. These men & women were determined to see you in heaven. There was a zeal that came with no shame. Who cared if people said they were crazy. All that mattered in the hearts and minds of these men & women was being sold out for Christ and spreading the Good News “Jesus is Lord and his ultimate display of Love was on Calvary’s cross.

God was the center of your life. (Still is for me). Loving God, Helping each other and saving souls was your purpose for living. We weren’t concerned with you rolling in the dough (so I thought), driving a fancy car, having a big house or your job status. Having a Masters or Doctorate degree in Theology was no concern. If you were moved by the Holy Spirit and were endowed with  Wisdom, Knowledge and Truth of His word, that’s all that matter.  We lived Hebrews 8:10; For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the lord; I will put My laws in their mind and write them on their hearts and I will be their God, and they shall be MY people. I remember preachers weren’t afraid if membership dropped or if they were liked. All that mattered was preaching the Good News of Christ…”He died that we might live. Rom. 5:8; but God demonstrates his own Love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

Those were the days. I’m 42 years old and I’m wondering where those days have gone. As for my generation are we preaching with conviction “Give Your Life to Christ and Showing the Love of Christ to others” and reiterating that “The Day of the Lord is nigh”. (1 Thes. 5:2; For you yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so comes as a thief in the night.V6; Therefore let us not sleep, as others do, but let us watch and be sober.)

For a very long time I have sat idle, letting fear keep me from speaking what has been burning deep in my heart and soul. Those men and women were assertive and maybe a little aggressive. But really for many it was a deep longing of salvation and love. See when you really love someone you care for the welfare of their soul.  I am not here to pass judgments but I’m here to give some food for thought. I hear a lot of preaching about prosperity, and how to be blessed and indeed God shows wealth is not the issue. But what has prosperity & wealth gotten this generation. Our country has no regard for our elderly & youth (history & future). There is a spirit of greed and self-righteousness hovering over the USA like a heavy thick cloud of smoke suffocating the life of it’s people. We are starving for real Love and Peace. God’s word says Mat.6:19 “DO NOT lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal. I believe as we laid up on this earth treasures we have forgotten the greatest treasure is the Love of our neighbors, family, friends. I also know that nothing from this planet will go with me into eternity. The only thing i will meet again from this life is another persons soul. Your soul. YOU ARE THE TREASURE THAT SHOULD BE STORED UP IN HEAVEN. So the questions becomes  “DO YOU LOVE YOUR NEIGHBORS SOUL?”

I had to examine my heart and mind.  This is why it’s so important to examine what it is that you treasure. I don’t want anyone wondering if God loves them because the answer is YES, YES AND YES. Actually his love is so great and so vast that our little minds can’t truly comprehend the depth.  I would love to see us all in the kingdom praising God and rejoicing that we made it through this experience called LIFE.  It is important to show those around us. What we Christians treasure.

  1. God and His Unfailing Love in a fallen world
  2. Family, Friends & strangers– show fruit of the spirit Galatians 5:22-23
  3. Work –acts of service to build others up in truth and love

Romans 12:1 says, “I beseech you therefore brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your BODIES a living sacrifice, HOLY, Acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service”.  What is our reasonable service? Let’s see God loves us so much that he died on the cross for us so why can’t we present ourselves to him as a Living…note the word “Living Sacrifice”…showing others we are committed to his word, seems reasonable to me, Right?  It’s not how you think you should present yourself to God, It’s how God wants & desires us to present ourselves to him. Check the word of God for what pleases the Lord. If we can do that everything else will be added unto us.

I have found myself conforming to this world in little things and in some cases big things. I have turned my head and in some cases was hoping the Lord would turn his and not see the hurt and heartache that I caused. But I’m here to tell you I serve a God that sits high and sees low. You can’t get anything past him, “He sees the deep recess of your heart and guess what, HE STILL LOVES each and everyone one of us in such an extraordinary and awesome way. He’s relentless in his pursuit of YOU.

I was crying out to the Lord, where are the Ester’s, Deborah’s, Abraham’s, Paul’s & Timothy’s of my generation. Those who are willing to take the risk for the Lord.   So what if people say you’re Crazy, Educated or Un-educated, Cultured or Un-cultured, Alone or with 12, Rich or Poor. Does that really matter, when our inheritance is not here on earth but in the bosom of God?  As the tears rolled down my face, I went to the restroom and when I looked in the mirror to wipe the tears away I heard a still voice say YOU. You know I gave myself the “Lorinda, girl you loosen it speech”. But I heard it very clear YOU. Of course that broke me down even more and I started to give a number of excuses as to why it couldn’t be me. Whew! Some of you have had the pull on your heart strings. there has been a tug and this little inner voice compelling you to take of stand for God, His Word, Truth and Love.

I urge each and every one of you don’t ignore it. Pray and seek his face and just say, Yes Lord! I surrender and I will spread the good news of your unfailing love. I am reminded of a song,

I pray you listen to the still voice calling you to either come home or take that step of faith and spread the Good News of Jesus Christ. Remember you’re not here by accident; you’re here to spread love, light and hope.He created you so that you can be the change  the world so desperately needs. Being confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ. Phil. 1:6
